Article X - Deacons and
Deaconesses
Section One: Definition
A Deacon must be a member of Valley View
Baptist Church and is one who has been given a spiritual charge of
overseeing the physical needs of a congregation including, but not being
limited to, overseeing the property, communion, visiting the sick, and
acts of benevolence. In doing so, Deacons free the Elders to
perform their ministry of prayer and their ministry of the Word of God
(Acts 6:4).
In a situation where it would be
inappropriate for a male deacon to minister to women within the
congregation or if needs arise in which gender is not an issue,
the scripture does give evidence that a woman may also serve in this
capacity (Romans 16:1). Therefore, for the context of this
document, the term “Deacon” shall apply to both male (Deacons) and
female (Deaconesses) individuals holding this office.
